By Reverend Jan Andries de Boer (Dutch Reverend)
Translated from EXiT (Dutch U2 fanclub magazine)

It was the summer of 2005. U2 was going to play at the Amsterdam Arena, my sister Sarolta, a big U2 fan, had bought 2 extra tickets. My wife and I got the privilege to attend the saturday concert (16th July). Until then I just liked U2 as a good band. I was touched at the concert. A extraordinary positive atmosphere, spiritual lyrics and speeches, the Ten Commandments projected in the version of the United Nations (the first 10 articles of the declaration of the Human Rights), a message of love and justice , a band who experienced cheering with integrity, some lyrics were outright prayers, Bono who showed with convincing gestures his beating heart, who blessed etc.
I experienced it as a mega church service in front of 50 000 people, who probably never go to church, but experienced this. It drove me to tears. The next morning, at sunday mass, I told impassionedly about this before and after the mass. It was then that I had the idea to hold a U2-mass, where U2 music, which is easy to take up like modern church music (gospel) would be played at the actual mass.
At 12th March 2006 it materialised. With the help of www.atu2.com, I had chosen the songs. It was easy to find Biblical references. It seemed that the Bible was text source No. 1 for U2. It was an extraordinary experience. The media attention surprised me, and it was great to see that the church was filled with other people than the normal visitors, who were touched. While not short before this I was one of the reverends, who did not know how to perform evangelization, and this while the message of the church is strong. I realised that I had found a way that works. A couple of old people who didn’t attend themselves thanked me for the U2 mass, which must have been great, because their grandson had not been to the church since many years, and had goosebumps.
I was surprised that a newspaper wrote 2 weeks later about U2 mass in the US. This developed independently. Paige Blair is the one who held the first U2 mass in the US. I contacted her. She puts it more beautiful: “I really believe that this is the Spirit moving in mysterious ways. ”
It is because of this trans atlantic link that I am planning to publish a part of the U2 mass also in english. There is more music fit for mass than the music of U2 and I want to offer my explorations to other colleagues who are busy with rock music in churches on the other side of the ocean.
What is a Rock mass?
A rock mass is a normal mass, the normal liturgy is followed., in which the traditional songs are replaced by rock songs. Naturally the lyrics of the song must fit at the place in the service. Moreover there must be a theme, which comes from the bible, so the bible and the song complement each other. Rock music in a big place at low volume doesn’t sound right, so a professional sound system is necessary, so the music can fill the hall entirely. It is worthwhile working with images, with filmed material or pictures. For this a good beamer is needed, the light in the hall should be dimmed. After the U2 mass I have done a Blof mass (dutch rockband) , and it will not be the last.

Images of ‘Naqoyqatsi’ of Philip Glass are shown at the Kyrieprayer and at the preach. At the Kyrie to view while praying and with in heart the words ‘Lord have mercy’. At the preach to support the spoken word. At playing back the songs the lyrics were projected line by line on a big screen, the original lyric and translated in dutch, with text references where possible. For this purpose movies have been made. I cannot say at this moment if, and under which conditions these will come available. The Powerpoint presentation, which is the basis for the movie, will be made available upon request.

Other U2 songs suitbable for a mass are:
Grace
When love comes to town
Pride
Love rescue me
The wanderer
Wake up, dead man
Walk on
Miracle drug

Jan Andries de Boer, “Rock” Reverend

Note: Jan Andries de Boer is big Frank Zappa fan (Frank Zappa hated churches and religion), and has recorded a song “40 CoeXisT” with dutch U2 coverband U2NL at Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum in 2008. This is based on the U2 song “40” and contains a peace preach about “CoeXisT” in the middle, while the music continues. In the preach is entered into topics as living together as Jew, Muslim and Christian, the multi cultural society, Fatwa, extremism, Wilders (dutch politician) and peace.
From the proceeds a part will go to Bono’s One project to make poverty history. Record company Universal is impressed and has asked U2 for approval to release the song.

beste Jan Andries,

Het heet On Your Knees, preaching the U@ catalogue, geloof ik.

Inderdaad ‘Get Up Off Your Knees’, zeer belangrijk, zeer U2 en kernachtig. Ook van belang: U2 At the End of the World en Walk On, the spiritual journey of U2 (laatste versie inclusief HTDAAB).

Dear Jan Andries

I’ll start in English to make sure you get the start of the conversation at least, before reverting to Afrikaans.

Great stuff, i enjoy the work you’re doing and hope and pray that the Spirit of God will work powerfully through your ministry to further the spread of God’s Kingdom and all of its values.

I am a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa working with students at our largest residential university, hoping to host a U2charist next year around the time of U2 performing in South Africa.

Do you have any tips or pointers at this early stage?

Waarnatoe werk mens daarna?

Alan
